Supreme tourism recognition u by Ann Morgan

A trio of national awards has put Waipoua Lodge at the pinnacle of New Zealand’s hospitality industry in what owners Fran and Ian Farrant say is “huge recognition which in turn energises the Kauri Coast.” The hat trick of accolades at the Hospitality New Zealand Awards for Excellence event in Auckland included Best Accommodation for 30 rooms and under, Excellence in Customer Service and ultimately, the Supreme Award — making the lodge the country’s best hospitality business. “It was just amazing as we entered three categories and I thought we had a very small chance,” said Fran. “The quality of the entries was huge. It was also a great opportunity as we had three acceptance speeches to promote the Kauri Coast and the trees.” The couple bought the century-old four-suite lodge six years ago. “We took a strategic approach with a Kauri Coast focus right from the start — turn left at the Brynderwyns and enjoy what the Kauri Coast has to offer, but Ian and I would really like to acknowledge the fact that we couldn’t do what we do without the support of our staff, the community and our local suppliers. All the other little businesses in Dargaville, we owe them a big thank you.” More than 450 people representing New Zealand’s hospitality sector attended the gala dinner held last week. The judges citation said Waipoua Lodge represented the ‘absolute pinnacle of natural and genuine Kiwi hospitality, not only having a beautifully presented luxury lodge, but creating an ambience which envelopes the guests with a sense of serenity and history’. It was the couple’s first submission

to the awards programme. “When we bought the lodge six years ago, it was a pretty daunting prospect — a totally new venture for us, coming from backgrounds in management and finance, but we fell in love with the place the moment we saw it. “It has been such a rewarding journey and an absolute pleasure to be able to share the experience with our guests. We are tremendously proud to have been recognised in this way,” said Fran. The judges also admired the lodge’s

finishing touches, which were ‘well thought out and beautifully executed’ and believed it was ‘a truly special place that seriously over-delivers, with owners that really go above and beyond for their guests’. All finalists were judged across a seven-week period, by a panel of independent industry professionals, which considered staff training and human resources, customer service, food and beverage offerings, marketing and promotional activities, and the demonstration of business growth. ¢

Sausage of the year u by Ann Morgan

The nation’s top sausage has been found at Mangawhai Meat Shop with the chicken, lime and lemongrass sausage beating 500 contenders in the Devro Great New Zealand Sausage Competition. Taking out the Supreme Award, creator of the sausage and owner of the store, Dan Klink also tied for the gold medal in the poultry category for the same sausage. “It is with thanks to my wife Ange, who has put up with me spending long hours coming up with ideas to enter competitions, that we could achieve what we have,” said Dan. “It is still all sinking in. Keeping a Kaipara connection

KAIPARA LIFESTYLER OctOber 18 - 2016

u by Ayla Miller

Outgoing chair of commissioners John Robertson will keep a Kaipara connection as he takes on the role as patron of Dargaville Arts Association. Chairman of Dargaville Ar ts Association Allan Mortensen said: “We are excited by the prospect of having him maintain a relationship with our organisation. “During his time in the Kaipara he has been a big supporter of the arts, and probably Muddy Waters Gallery’s biggest customer. “John has a great deal of experience in the business world and has a large network of contacts. “This combined with his love of the arts made him the perfect choice to offer a position of patron. We feel certain that his knowledge, help and advice going forward will be of huge benefit to us.” Mr Robertson

Working well with DOC

says he was honoured to be asked to take on this role. “I have a real interest in the arts, and seeing the arts in Dargaville and in Kaipara flourish. We have a very strong arts community from Mangawhai to Dargaville to Te Kopuru and right through, so it is neat to be able to support Dargaville Arts Association in this way.” He says, now that his time as commissioner for the Kaipara District Council has come to an end, this enables him to keep a connection to the Kaipara. “After being involved with the Kaipara over my four years I’ve got to know a number of the artists and so this enables me to help champion Dargaville arts.” ¢

Over the past month there has been talk about getting rid of pests over the next few years with trapping, poison bait, cyanide and 1080 all options. Many years ago when the Department of Conservation was looking at using 1080, they came to our Centre to see what flavour Sparky my Kiwi showed interest in. There were all sorts of fruit flavours plus peppermint and aniseed. Sparky showed an interest in some but others he would not go near.

p John Robertson will be patron of Dargaville Arts Association

At one meeting I attended, an expert told us you could put some 1080 pellets in a glass of water and drink it.

Crown observer appointed

We should have been told this stuff was deadly and could kill all sorts of animals and birds if it’s not used correctly. Over the years we have learnt the dangers.

u by Ayla Miller

A crown observer has been announced to help the new Kaipara District Council settle into their role. Barry Harris will take on this position when elected council members come into office and his term of the appointment will end on September 30 2017. As a crown observer Mr Harris will provide advice and guidance to the Council and does not have a decisionmaking role. “My role is to help and assist the new mayor, councillors and the executive as they transition back to a democratically elected council. It is about bringing my experience in governance and local government to help them in any way

I can,” he said. Mr Harris has had a number of governance roles as well as previously being a group director at Fonterra and director at RD1 Ltd. He has worked with mayor Gent before on the board of Fonterra and says he is looking forward to reintroducing himself. Associate Local Government minister Louise Upston encourages the locals to get behind their locally elected representatives. “There are challenges ahead and it is important locals work with the council to build a positive future together,” she said. ¢

I would be one of the first to speak out in defence of any wild birds being killed and believe me I have had some heated arguments with a DOC scientist about this. Nowadays DOC is up front and working well with many groups to reach these goals. A very good example of using baits and traps can be seen at the Whangarei Heads where at night you will hear the call of the kiwi. Many of the birds that left the area years ago are now returning to nest and hatch their young again in a safe zone. I had to remove my blinkers and realise that some birds would die so many others could breed to build up the population. p Louise Upston Associate Local Government Minister

Remember this was about 20 years ago; the biggest mistake that was made in my mind was trying to convince the public that 1080 was very safe and would not harm water ways or cattle. Apparently cattle would have to eat heaps of it before they would get sick but it didn’t take long to prove this wrong.

09 439 5923 • www.aratapu.com arataputavern@xtra.co.nz

Today there are many groups and landowners working with the Department of Conservation in many ways. The other day a land owner told me that after getting advice about controlling pests, it’s now the second year that he has had the native pigeon rear a chick very close to his house. Like many others, he has put time and effort into pest control and is reaping the rewards. A visitor at the centre asked me about this eradication programme as he was dead against it. After telling him my side of it, he felt that I should know better and should be enforcing an allout ban. He was travelling around the North and said when he went into the forests that birds were dead and there were no bird calls. I suggested that he visited the Whangarei Heads area and see and hear for himself. I think we all need to stop and think before reacting in a negative way.

Combining her passions u by Ayla Miller

Community radio station Big River FM are welcoming another intern onto their waves.

p Annika Matheis is looking forward to learning more about New Zealand culture during her sixmonth internship at Big River FM

Annika Matheis is 21 years old and hails from Saarland, the smallest federal state in Germany. “I wanted to come to Dargaville because I liked the idea of being part of a smaller community,” she said. Annika is currently working towards her Bachelor of Arts majoring in English and Music. To complete her Bachelor of Arts degree she must spend six months in an English speaking nation and chose New Zealand as it had always appealed to her. As well as studying she worked part-time at Saarlandischer Runfunk radio station in the youth and sports department.

“I am looking forward to seeing more of the country. I’m interested in sport and watched my first ever Rugby game in my first week here between the All Blacks and the Springboks.” She says she is excited to have this opportunity as it combines all her passions for journalism, radio, music and English. Seeking a safer highway The New Zealand Transport Agency is proposing changes to the speed limits on State Highway One through Kaiwaka township to make it safer for residents and road users. More consistent speeds are planned, replacing the variations and changes that are currently in place, which will mean lower speed limits over a greater stretch of the highway. “By introducing just one speed limit that is clearly signposted and doesn’t change part way through the township, it’s anticipated that more motorists will know what’s expected of them and are more likely to drive within the limits,” said Tim Crow, the agency’s network performance and safety manager. The proposals involve introducing a 60 kilometres per hour speed limit from 130 metres north-west of Kaiwaka/Mangawhai Road to 300 metres south of Settlement Road. This means the current 100 kilometres per hour highway speed limit will be lowered to a uniform 60 kilometres per hour through the township including the sections currently signed for 50 and 70 kilometres per hour. Signage and road markings will be installed to signal the new limit and repeater signs will be installed every kilometre.

“We know that reducing speeds and improving safety is a top priority for the Kaiwaka community and the Transport Agency believes these changes will strike a chord with more motorists passing through and encourage them to drop their speeds,” said Mr Crow. “This will create a better balance in helping freight and commuter vehicles travel safely and efficiently through Kaiwaka without compromising the safety and amenity of local residents and will help enhance and support the goals of the Kaiwaka Township Improvement Plan.” A sign signalling traffic speeds has been installed to encourage drivers to slow down. There are also plans for a pedestrian refuge to be built on the highway near the shops to improve safety for pedestrians. The agency is now seeking feedback from stakeholders including Kaipara District Council, the police, the AA, and National Road Carriers Inc. A recommendation will then be made to the agency’s national office for final approval and to gazette the speed change with signs erected and enforceable 28 days later.

The Kaiwaka Volunteer Fire Brigade fishing competition will be raising funds toward training facilities and new equipment.

Ruawai Boys’ and Girls’ Agriculture Calf Club Day returns for its 84th year this month celebrating the many years of community involvement in the event. “Calves, lambs and goats born between July 1 and September 15 are eligible to enter and will have received countless hours of care and training from Ruawai children in preparation for the big day,” says club secretary Colleen Glass. The event was started by a group of parents to offer the calf club day for Ruawai College and Primary School students to participate in. It is one of the longest running calf clubs North of the Waikato running under this structure. “It is very family orientated with the original cups, and children from the descendants from the original families still attending. “It is a very special day and new people to the area and the children living in town have access to farmers who lend their calves and give the children the experience. “Alongside the Calf Club Day competition and exhibitions, Ruawai Primary holds a fantastic annual school gala on the same day.” This year, as well as the popular food and drink, stalls, cake auction and raffles, there will also be a car boot sale, games and busking style music.

p The fishing Competition is open and can be fished on both East and West coasts

“The community gala and Calf Club Day are a great celebration of our rural community and we welcome everyone to come and join in the fun this year,” says principal Curtis Gaylor. Ruawai’s Calf Club Day and Community Gala take place at Ruawai Primary School on Saturday, October 29 from 9.30am. For more information visit www.ruawai.school.nz or phone 09 439 2307. ¢

“The brigade have been involved in 105 calls this year. “We are all volunteers and have been busy. There are 15 of us and the money fundraised will go toward training facilities and gear. We will possibly purchase a defibrillator for the town,” says organiser Michael Renton. “We have mystery weight, average, and lucky ticket prizes of $500 cash each. The adult species is snapper, gurnard, kingfish, kahawai and crayfish, and the junior prizes is for snapper and kahawai for 15-year-olds and under. We will have lamb and pork sandwiches available on the Sunday between the weigh-in times for a gold coin donation.” Mr Renton says being a volunteer fireman is very rewarding, especially when you are able to save someone’s life. “We encourage others to join us. We train every Monday night and you can

work your way up through the ranks, from qualified to senior firefighter or chief. The camaraderie is great and good friendships are made. “People participating in these events all help toward helping us with improving things at the station. We recently paid for new concrete and a new fence and we are grateful to those who support us.” The fishing contest is open so you can fish on the east or west coast. The weigh in time will be at the firestation on Gibbons road, Kaiwaka between 6–8pm on Saturday, November 5, and 2–4pm on Sunday, November 6, with prize giving and an auction which has MAF approval following the weigh-in. Tickets are available from the Three Furlongs bar and grill, Jaques Four Square, Wellsford Sports and Leisure or contact Mike on 021 133 7269 or John 09 431 2248. ¢

Young entrepreneurs’ achievements NORTHLAND u by Ann Morgan

Six Rodney College students will be attending the Young Enterprise Regional Awards this Friday for the natural body scrub they developed as part of their level two business studies. “We are part of the YES scheme and we have a CEO, finance manager, communications and operations person and two marketing personnel. We had to come up with a product to sell as part of our studies last year and saw the body scrubs idea and decided to develop a natural scrub,” said CEO Marine Gayford. “We found a body scrub recipe using coffee granules and altered it and added essential oils. We did a lot of tests last year and this year came up with a new recipe improving the product.” Marine says coffee has good properties that helps rejuvenate your skin and a portion of the profits is donated to the Cancer Society. “We have all lost someone to cancer and decided to donate to the Cancer Society in general. “It has been great that a lot of local businesses have supported us too. We are really proud of our achievement and going to the awards is a bonus.” The students have sold more than 150 jars this year through their Sass coffee scrub online store, attending community events and direct sales. ¢

Breakfast for choppers u by Ann Morgan

The annual Northland Rescue Helicopters fundraising appeal has started and the Kaiwaka community are raising awareness and celebrating the helipad in progress at the sports complex with a breakfast with John Markby and Flash from More FM. “We are holding a number of community breakfasts over the next few weeks across Northland — Kaiwaka will be the first. There are prizes, free breakfast and a chance to speak on air,” said Northland Rescue Helicopter spokesperson Steve MacMillan. “It is the volunteers in the communities that organise these events. We would be nothing without volunteers. “Rural Northland needs the service more than anyone because of the logistics to access help, and it is that golden hour that gets people to care and helps save lives.” The Kaipara District utilises the rescue chopper service on a regular basis and has the organisation are aiming to replace one of the choppers in the near future. “This week

the first of 60,000 donation envelopes will be sent in the post for the annual appeal,” said Mr MacMillan. “We encourage everyone to use the envelope to donate. They have the chance to win one of 60 chopper rides and we are also giving away 10 simulator experiences.” The average cost per call-out is around $6,800 and the fundraising appeal p Last year’s recipients of the thank you chopper flights for people donating in the Kaipara and Northland area has an ultimate target of well over $200,000. The Kaiwaka Community breakfast will be at the Fire Station, Gibbons Road, Kaiwaka this Friday, October 21 from 7–9am. ¢

The best of town and country The heartland of the Kaipara District is experiencing a demographic change, as this picturesque part of New Zealand becomes a destination for lifestyle seekers of all ages. This means a changing attitude to what constitutes a great night out with friends — and a change in the adventurous direction of local menus. At the freshly refurbished and thoroughly art-deco Kiwi-retro Thirsty Tui — Paparoa’s convivial public house — this means a shake-up of what’s on offer, blurring the lines between a hearty traditional pub meal and the sophisticated complexity of flavours experienced in a cosmopolitan restaurant. Tavern owner Pam and new manager Kevin referred to a travelogue of world cuisine traditions to add a twist to local ingredients, blending fresh Kaipara fare such as oysters, flounder and beef with exotic condiments and fun, exuberant presentations. Resident chef Dino Robertson is the man behind the oven and knives as this interesting new menu meets the public, and some of the treats in store are already causing a stir. Zesty Louisiana style popcorn shrimp come haloed in golden batter, with the choice of both a home-made barbecue sauce and an Asian-inspired dipping

sauce that’s sharp with tamarind but sweet on the aftertaste. A simple dish like pork sausages on mash is spiced up with the addition of piquant hot mustard, while the ‘bangers’ themselves are prepared just for the Thirsty Tui, full of the flavour of pork with hints of cumin and fennel. Seafood from the harbour itself is a regional delicacy with flounder, oysters and more coming right from the ocean

to the kitchen. It’s a sign of changing tastes perhaps, but a step in a bold culinary direction for those who crave an adventurous dining experience, which blends the fresh produce of the country with a little of the world-cuisine sensibilities of the city. Attention to detail, relaxing surroundings, a crackling fire and a wellthought-out wine list only add to the appeal of this reinvented country classic.

LIVE CONCERT EVENT • TOP LOCAL BANDS

Labour weekend may be a yearly tradition, based on the advent of the 40-hour week, which gave the average Everyman a weekend in which to relax. But nestled within the ironic concept of celebrating work with a day off is another tick on the calendar — the start of real outdoors weather. The outdoors is what it’s all about here in the Kaipara, and for many that means not just recreation, but also the chance to rustle up the best of local produce from the land and sea. Anglers will be keen to sort out their equipment before a big season of local fishing, culminating in a series of big fishing competitions around the North, including our own regional King of the

Kaipara in December. Hunters will be hot on the trail of some wild pork this season too, and while it’s the final hurrah of the pig hunting time of year, the annual Mangamuka Pig Hunt promises not only a chance to head for the bushclad hills but also a chance to savour some real outdoorsman’s tucker. The legendary contest in the shadow of the Mangamuka ranges draws in hunters

Science the key to greenhouse solution

Any job big or small. We do them ALL

u by Andy Bryenton

• Stump & Tree Removal • Driveway Prep & Regrading • Post Hole Borer

Greenhouse gas emissions have been a contentious global political issue and it’s not just highly industrialised nations at the forefront of the debate. In New Zealand, it’s not our auto fleet or our factories which are of concern — it’s our livestock. However, new research spearheaded by James Cook University in Australia has revealed an unlikely ally in the battle to reduce methane ‘exhaust’ from herds worldwide. It’s a plant called Asparagopsis Taxiformis, and when added to cattle feed, it has been shown to reduce methane output by up to 99 per cent in the lab. During trials the scientists involved were so shocked by the data provided that they initially suspected an equipment fault. Asparagopsis is easy to grow, cattle find it palatable and the mechanism by which it slashes methane emissions should prove no threat to the digestive workings of bovine stomachs. What’s truly surprising is that Asparagopsis is a kind of seaweed.

Feeding seaweed to cattle is no new idea — the ancient Greeks and the Icelandic Norsemen used the slimy sea plants to supplement feed for their livestock. The idea that using such a resource could provide a solution to methane emissions is very new, however. Methane is a far more dangerous greenhouse gas than the more commonly known carbon dioxide, and any way of reducing the contribution from the world’s 1.5 billion cattle could be revolutionary. Further tests to ascertain the longterm condition and health of cattle with a seaweed-enhanced diet are underway across the Tasman, but those initial figures point the way toward a possible solution to one of our biggest greenhouse gas challenges.  ¢
